The vast majority of fire starts occur in select "high-risk" areas (e.g., road-sides or utilities infrastructure). Today’s leading fire retardants are severely limited by their formulations, which are incapable of retaining these retardants at target sites for the duration of a fire season (upwards of six months). Existing products can not be preventatively and precisely applied to roadsides, target vegetation and utility infrastructure.
Another class of highly effective retardants are aqueous film-forming foams comprising perfluorinated surfactants as the fire suppression agent driving their performance; however, these surfactants have emerged as priority environmental contaminants on account of concerns regarding their environmental persistence, potential for bioaccumulation, and toxicity.

To address the major limitations of current technologies, we have developed FORTIFY™, which can be deployed at sites of particularly high fire danger for the entire duration of a fire season, providing a protective barrier that can prevent a vast number of wildland fires from starting in the first place. FORTIFY™ is powered by VISMOTECH™, an environmentally-benign hydrogel platform made from renewable resources that exhibits critical properties that are impossible with traditional hydrogels. FORTIFY™ can be deployed using standard equipment for simple application to a diverse array of target fuels and enable season-long retention of polyphosphate retardants. This approach is impossible with current technologies.
